Monday Morning Musings 02.08.16

  1. Evil is real. We don't have to look far to know that is true. Even so, God has made it clear He is the ulitimate power over Satan, the Prince of Darkness. Jesus, as the "Light of Life" lives and reigns in us, giving us power and authority over the enemy! (Luke 10:19). However, spiritual darkness is disorienting. In Mark 5 after Jesus casts the demons into the pigs, the people ask Him to leave their town. And He does. Why? They knew He was the ultimate power and that if he stayed, they would no longer be in control of their lives. They chose their own spiritual darkness over the light of life. The demoniac, however, begs Jesus to let him follow Him. Which one are we, the townspeople or the demonic? May we not walk in ignorance or fear, but trust that "one little word shall fell him." And that word is Jesus. ‪#‎thelightshinesinthedarkness‬
  2. This is a big week for us as Leigh and I will be leading our bi-annual marriage retreat this weekend at Mission Inn with 115 couples. We'll be covering lots of ground, but here is a TEASER on understanding the importance of our spiriutal lives in our marriages: "Why do people have affairs? Very often we don't go elsewhere because we are looking for another person. We go elsewhere because we are looking for another self. It isn't so much that we want to leave the person we are with as we want to leave the person we have become." Esther Perel ‪#‎truth‬‪#‎FPCOMarriageRetreat2016‬
  3. ODD INVITATION: As most of you know, I stay out of offering my opinions on political candidates, but it would not be a surprise to many that I am generally a social conservative. For that reason, I about fell out of my chair when I was asked to speak at a BERNIE SANDERS rally at the end of February. I asked the person what, exactly, they would like me to say.....then politely declined. ‪#‎feeltheBern‬
  4. Congratulations to Dale Intemann van Gelder, FPCO's COO, who was crowned Leadership Team Darts Champion last Friday evening. Her grueling training regimen and superior equipment led to an easier than expected victory. After watching Dale warm up, Case Thorp and Jack Peebles declined to participate. ‪#‎bullseye‬
  5. I was saddened to learn that an off off-Broadway production called The Naked Boys was being performed in Orlando, essentially a group of naked men singing. Not only that, but The Orlando Sentinel chose to do not one, but two different articles highlighting the show even though it was in a small theater far from the "arts community." There are lines of decency and they got crossed. Why do we have to glory in it as a community?‪#‎notallnudityisart‬
  6. THIS WEEK'S SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE: In Kabul, Afghanistan last week, the Taliban gunned down an Afghan soldier, Wasil Ahmad, on a street corner for his leadership in fighting against the Taliban during a particularly grusome siege last year. He had been declared a war hero in the community and was given a local parade celebrating his bravery. HE WAS 11 - IN THE FOURTH GRADE.
  7. We're getting consumed by our stuff. One of my favorite national columnists, Marni Jameson (she actually writes on home decorating etc, but I love to read her stuff because she it is often hilarious and always well written) shared that there are more self-storage facilities in the US than all Starbucks, McDonalds and Subways COMBINED. 53,000 of them. Guess how many the REST OF THE WORLD has? 10,000. Over 90% of the space is rented, and it generates $24 billion in revenue. Clearly, there are legitimate reasons for such rentals, but the numbers seem to communicate a larger message. We obtain/consume far more than we actually need.....and then don't want to let go of it.
  8. Is it me or does Bruce Springsteen always appear to have a dip in his lower lip? ‪#‎theboss‬
  9. SUPER BOWL POETRY: I had rooting interests on both sides last night, but it was poetic to see Peyton Manning, a shell of his former self, win the Super Bowl on the back of his defense. I was honesty disappointed by the commercials, but got a kick out of Helen Mirren's "don't drink and drive" spot. ‪#‎trainingcampsopeninJuly‬
